1. Land Cost: As solar penetration increases, and transmission costs soar, solar will physically move towards the distribution grid, rather than the transmission grid. The distribution grid is closer to urban areas, with more expensive land and smaller sites, which puts tracking and higher production density at a premium. Adding more panels here will not be economical due to land cost and lower energy production density.
2. Time of day energy production: utilities highly value WHEN energy is produced during the day, not the maximum energy production. Tracking produces more energy during higher value times with a more constant output curve, which utilities highly value. In contrast, fixed-tilt arrays produce a higher energy peak during the middle of the day. As solar penetration increases, the production curve of tracking arrays is significantly higher value energy, resulting in better LCOE and PPA rates.
3. Higher Cost: Adding more fixed panels increases balance of system (BOS) costs (inverters, wiring, etc.), making the PV system higher cost but lower value. Improving the energy production density by tracking the sun is higher value.
